We have changed the layout of the forum to a more simple design. We have also created status updates for members. It is very similar to the Facebook/Twitter status updates. You can now tell people what you are doing whenever you want just by clicking the “Update Status” link up top next to “FAQ” when you are logged in. If you have any questions or comments shoot an email to admin@geospatialdiscussion.com.

Forum and Wiki Integration
We have now fixed the site where a user can login to the site, and he or she can access the wiki pages and the forum without having to login twice or create a seperate account. Enjoy.

Free GIS Software
Here are a few open source GIS software links. More can be found on the Wiki Page: Open Source GIS Software. These are some of the more commonly suggested GIS packages within the Geospatial Discussion’s forum.

GRASS GIS is free and is great with image processing, map creation, and spatial modeling. Click here for the GRASS GIS Home Page: GRASS.

MapWindow GIS is another free GIS desktop package. This software can handle shapefiles and grid data. There are also spatial analysis functions built in. Visit the MapWindow home page here: MapWindow.

Quantum GIS is an open source gis package that can run on Windows, Mac, Linux, or Unix. It can handle vector and raster data. QGIS can be downloaded here: QGIS Home Page.

The File Exchange
The File Exchange is a new forum added to the Geosptial Discussion. The main goal of the File Exchange is to allow users to share and exchange geospatial files. We have already had a member post a map, which is exactly what the File Exchange forum is for. Members can also share GIS data. We have added GIS file extensions so GIS data can be uploaded. There are many file extensions for Geospatial Data, and we may have missed a few. If you are having trouble uploading a geospatial data file, the problem is most likely the extension type. Send an email to admin@geospatialdiscussion.com, and the file extension will be added. Source codes can also be uploaded, and if the member wants to add the source code to the Wiki Page, he or she can do so.
Thanks for all of the great posts lately!

Featured Link
We will be making a new Featured Link for the site very soon. We have several sites in mind, but we are open for ideas if you want to suggest a great site. The idea behind the Featured Link is a site that makes a contribution to the geospatial realm, which means it has great content and it is very informative. If you would like to write the Featured Link article for the site, we are okay with this too. Just write an article about the site with some things you like and submit it to admin@geospatialdiscussion.com.

Geospatial Blogs
We recently have added a new “Blogs” page to the website. We created this page to give visitors and members to the site a chance to find blogs and see some of the latest blogs via the RSS Feed. We would love to place your blog in the “Blogs” section of the website. If you want to submit your blog, here is how to go about doing it:
- E-mail admin@geospatialdiscussion.com, and tell him what category(GIS, RS, GPS) you would like to see your blog filed under
- Send a private message in the forum to the admin with the blog URL and what category you would like to see your blog in
Thanks,
The Geospatial Discussion Team
